Release date May 5th 2025

After a considerable hiatus featuring potential homelessness (thank you Lettuce Truss), among other life events, here is my 15th collection of tunes. The long layoff was I feel, in retrospect, a benefit because I am as happy with this album as I have ever been with any of the previous 14, or it might be senility !!
The record was released on 05/05/25 approximately 30 years after the first one !!
For those who don’t know, I am a singer songwriter of somewhat long standing. I spent my early years ‘On the Rock’n’Roll Road’ in the USA and Europe in the 60’s and 70’s learning how good you really have to be!
My music is a mixture of Americana, Country and Hawaiiana with many other elements shoehorned in.
I hope you enjoy xxx
Track Notes
01 BORN ON THE BAYOU (Fogerty)
My favourite Creedence tune here featuring Harmonica by the great Jez who doesn’t know he’s on it. He recorded the part for me about 10 years ago when we were in a band together. Swampy !!
02 BUCKETS OF RAIN (Dylan)
Bob Dylan moves to Hawaii or somewhere similar. Ukulele, Bongos and Lap Steel Guitar.
03 GETTING ROUND TO GOODBYE (Greene)
I wrote the music for this when I was living in California in 2005. It was a test piece for the studio I was setting up that featured all the instruments I could lay my hands on.
I always liked the result but had no words that fitted it until last year when I was thinking about how our children grow up so fast.
04 I DON’T HAVE TO CRAWL (Crowell)
A Rodney Crowell song written, presumably, for EmmyLou Harris. Pedal Steel !
05 WISH I COULD’VE KNOWN YOU BETTER (Greene)
A lyric inspired by losing the great Jerry Garcia.
I knew him a bit, we once drove from Iowa City to Lincoln Nebraska together when I was but a callow youth. I was WAY out of my depth but I knew things weren’t right.
Also applies to every person that left us too soon. Piano by Rosalie James.
06 THE CRYING GAME (Stephens)
Made famous by Dave Berry back in the 60’s this is a strange tune musically.
Crazy chord changes and melody. Always loved it and swore I’d record it one day.
07 SUNBURN FOR THE SOUL (Greene)
Weird piano part that came from nowhere as they do. Lyrically a reflection on the hippie movement and how it accomplished so much more than we knew at the time.
We scared them !!
08 THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (Black/Arnold/Westlake/Greene)
OK, here’s an excuse for me to have a rant about the state of the world over a driving tune.
Make it look like an accident !
09 SAYS A FOOL LIKE ME (Greene)
Back to Hawaii for this confessional piece.
10 WHITE FREIGHTLINER BLUES (Van Zandt)
A Townes Van Zandt tune from Texas. Pedal Steel !
Thanks to Richard Bennett for teaching it to me.
11 YOU’RE GONNA LOSE THAT GIRL (Lennon/McCartney)
What can I say, a Beatles song re-imagined with help from Rosalie James
on Backing Vocals.
Like most Lennon tunes there is much more going on than is immediately obvious. Love It X
Recorded & Produced in Truro, Cornwall by
John Greene © 2024/5
The album was recorded entirely on headphones in the bedroom of my new home in Truro, Cornwall using Cubase 5 (DAW), one decent condenser microphone and a plethora of assorted guitars, the electric ones through Amplitube 3

The drums were programmed using Superior Drummer 2 and the keyboard and bass parts mainly through a Nektar Impact LX61 in conjunction with N.I. Kontakt 4.
The Hammond B3 with N.I. B4II.
The harmonica on ‘Born on the Bayou’ was played by Jez, a long, long time ago and Rosalie James contributed piano on ‘Wish I Could’ve Known you Better’ and wonderful vocals on
‘You’re Gonna Lose That Girl’
Otherwise it’s all me.

LYRICS
Track 1
BORN ON THE BAYOU
John Fogerty ©1969
When I was just a little boy,
Standing to my Daddies knee,
My Poppa said, son, dont let the man get you
Do what he done to me.
I can remember the fourth of July,
Running through the backwoods, bare.
I can still hear my old hound dog
Chasing down a hoodoo there.
Just a chasing down a hoodoo there.
Born on the bayou;
Born on the bayou;
Born on the bayou.
Wish I was back on the bayou.
Rolling with some Cajun queen.
Wish I was on a fast freight train,
Racing down to New Orleans.
Just a racing down to New Orleans.
Born on the bayou;
Born on the bayou I was;
Born on the bayou.
Track 2
BUCKETS OF RAIN
Bob Dylan ©1975
Buckets of rain
Buckets of tears
I’ve got buckets comin’ out of my ears
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand
You got all the love baby,
That I can stand
I’ve been meek
And hard like an oak
I’ve seen pretty people disappear like smoke
Friends will arrive, friends will disappear
If you want me baby,
I’ll be here
I like your smile
And your fingertips
Like the way that you move your hips
I like the way you love me strong and slow
I’m takin’ you with me
Baby, when I go
Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must
You do what you must do and ya do it well
I’ll do it for you
Baby, can’t you tell?
Buckets of rain
Buckets of tears
I’ve got buckets comin’ out of my ears
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand
You got all the love baby,
That I can stand
Track 3
GETTING ROUND TO GOODBYE
John Greene ©2024
Life in this world,
is cold and hard and cruel
Presumptions that fail
can make you feel a fool
Get off your knees,
live your whole life true,
It’s just a matter of time
until the ordeal is through.
Every night, you’ve got to
stare that demon down
And every day,
try and stop him coming round
Too far too fast,
swimming in water too deep
Maybe all that you’ll get
is an everlasting sleep
So much for yesterday, tomorrow’s already here
Where’d she go the girl, that I used to know
Grown up straight and grown up strong
Grown up so fast, and gone
Now it’s getting round to goodbye time again
Track 4
I DON’T HAVE TO CRAWL
Rodney Crowell ©1977
When you look at me
Like you don’t know me
And you talk to me
Like you’ve never met me
I can leave you alone if I try
If I tried I could tell you goodbye
If I wanted to
Then you call on me
As if I should run to you
And you make your move
As if I should follow you
Well I don’t have to be nobody’s fool
I won’t make no exception of you
I don’t have to be nobody’s fool
I don’t make no exception for you
I don’t have to crawl
I can just walk away
No I don’t have to crawl
No I don’t have to crawl
I can just walk away
No I don’t have to crawl, no no
I don’t have to crawl
No no
Track 5
WISH I COULD’VE KNOWN YOU BETTER
John Greene ©2023
I wish I could’ve known you better
It’s funny how the good don’t stay
Something ain’t never for nothing
There’s always a price to pay
Fame hits like a lightning strike
Like a tornado
Comes in from the blind side
Lays everybody low
I didn’t wanna be a Fifty Dollar friend
But he got that fifty five mile stare
A tombstone sat behind his eyes
He was heading, heading for nowhere
I guess I could’ve played with fire,
But that wasn’t where I lived
Dead gamblers don’t have many friends
That are ready to forgive
I didn’t wanna be a Fifty Dollar friend
But he got that fifty five mile stare
A tombstone sat behind his eyes
He was heading, heading for nowhere
Heading for nowhere
To shake that ghost, to get to sleep
I knew I’d have to dig in deep
To shake that ghost, to take the blow
I knew I’d have to let you go
But I wish I could’ve known you better
Track 6
THE CRYING GAME
Geoff Stephens ©1964
I know all there is to know
About the crying game,
I’ve had my share of the crying game,
First there are kisses,
Then there are sighs,
And then before,
You know where you are,
Your sayin’ goodbye
One day soon I’m gonna tell the moon
About the crying game,
And if he knows,
Maybe he’ll explain,
Why there are heartaches,
Why there are tears,
And what to do,
To stop feelin’ blue,
When love disappears
Don’t want no more of the crying game,
Don’t want no more of the crying game
Track 7
SUNBURN FOR THE SOUL
John Greene ©2024
We came a long, long way
Without going very far
Never faltered, never altered
Till the last hoorah
Where did all the deadbeats go
When Babylon ceased to be
Back home to make families
Somewhere to be free
I used to walk across London
In the middle of the night
Going home from some adventure
Mad with delight
And I wonder what he was thinking
That boy I no longer know
Days I’d love to live over
Tell me how and I’ll go
Maybe we just got sold
Maybe we lost control
Maybe we all got old
Too much sunburn for the soul
I know we can’t go back there
To those days that seemed so free
Reeling in the Roundhouse darkness
Driving with Jerry G.
Wild as Indians we wandered
Never going for the deal
It didn’t end at Altamont
It just started to get real
Maybe we just got sold
Maybe we lost control
Maybe we all got old
Too much sunburn for the soul
Track 8
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
Black / Arnold / ©2010
Bond Theme – Norman ©1962
I Close My Eyes – Westlake ©1968
Additional Lyrics – Greene ©2025
We know how to hurt
But we know how to heal
We know what to show
And what to conceal
We know when to talk
And we know when to touch
No one ever died
From wanting too much
The world is not enough
For those who only lie and cheat and steal
But if we’re strong enough
Together we can save the world, with love
People like us
Know how to survive
There’s no point in living
If you can’t feel alive
We know when to kiss
And we know when to kill
If we can’t have it all
Then nobody will
I feel safe
I feel scared
I feel ready
And yet unprepared
The world is not enough
For those who only lie and cheat and steal
But if we’re strong enough
Together we can save the world, with love
Track 9
SAYS A FOOL LIKE ME
John Greene ©2024
Well it’s a mystery to me
So much wasted time
Bad decisions cast a long shadow
It might have been a dream
Cos I dreamed like everybody else
Of coming to the end of that road
But good enough was never good enough
For a rebel at heart like me
Sailing across an ocean
Can turn a boy into a man
Doing right for the wrong reason
Is still doing the right thing
Nobody’s an angel
Nobody’s a saint
Everyone’s a sinner
Specially those that say that they ain’t
So I’m leaving it all up to you My imaginary friend
Not gonna dwell on old, old news I’m going to move on
So says a fool, So says a fool like me
I made mistakes that I can’t change
I’ll have to let my love pour down like rain
When did I know, when did I turn
It’s all so clear to me now
And here’s just another tired old man
Who faltered years ago
Keep the wind southerly if you please
I got nothing left to show
So I’m leaving it all up to you My imaginary friend
Not gonna dwell on old, old news I’m going to move on
So says a fool,
So says a fool,
So says a fool like me.
Track 10
WHITE FREIGHTLINER BLUES
Townes Van Zandt ©1973
I’m goin’ out on the highway
Listen to them big trucks whine
I’m goin’ out on the highway
Listen to them big trucks whine
White Freightliner
Won’t you steal away my mind?
Well, it’s bad news from Texas
Half my friends are dying there
Well, it’s bad news from Texas
Half my friends are dying there
White Freightliner
Won’t you steal away my mind?
Lord, I’m gonna ramble
‘Til I got no place to go
Lord, I’m gonna ramble
‘Til I got no place to go
White Freightliner
Won’t you take me home?
Track 11
YOU’RE GONNA LOSE THAT GIRL
Lennon &McCartney ©1965
If you don’t take her out tonight,
She’s going to change her mind,
And I will take her out tonight,
And I will treat her kind.
You’re going to lose that girl,
You’re going to lose that girl.
If you don’t treat her right, my friend,
You’re going to find her gone,
‘Cause I will treat her right, and then
You’ll be the lonely one.
You’re going to lose that girl,
You’re going to lose
I’ll make a point
Of taking her away from you,
Watch what you do yeah,
The way you treat her what else can I do?
If you don’t take her out tonight,
She’s going to change her mind,
And I will take her out tonight,
And I will treat her kind.
You’re going to lose that girl,
You’re going to lose that girl.
You’re going to lose that girl,
You’re going to lose that girl.
